FIRST POP-UP EXHIBITION

WITH PARTNER LEVIS IN 2019

What is Queer Britain? Queer Britain is the UK’s first and only LGBTQ+ museum. We opened on 4 May 2022 and have welcomed over 100,000 visitors since then. We are a registered charity, and receive no government funding – we rely entirely on the generosity of our visitors, members, patrons and sponsors to fund our work. You can find out more about our history here.

Why did you choose the word ‘Queer’? Language changes: ‘Queer’ has long been a term of abuse for LGBTQ+ people, but it is being reclaimed. Younger people, especially now, embrace it proudly as their identity, and universities use it in an academic sense. We call ourselves Queer Britain because ‘Q’ is the most inclusive letter under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, and we want to be part of the conversation that helps remove the last of its sting.

Where is the museum and when can I visit? The museum is located at 2 Granary Square, Kings Cross, London, N1C 4BH. We are open from 12pm-6pm Wednesdays - Sundays throughout the year. Our visitor information can be found here.

Do I need to book my visit in advance and / or buy a ticket? The museum operates with a ‘pay what you can’ donation for admission. You can prebook your visit online here, or donate onsite when you visit.

How accessible is Queer Britain? The museum is entirely step-free. Our space is suitable for wheelchairs, and we have a fully accessible gender-neutral bathroom with a changing station on site. Our Welcome Team staff are on hand to assist you, including with any hidden disabilities. Find out more about accessibility on our Visit page here, our entry on Euan’s guide here. If you have any additional questions, get in touch with us at hello@queerbritain.org.uk

Can I bring children to the museum? We welcome visitors of all ages. We strongly believe that Queer Britain should be a space where young people can positively engage with LGBTQ+ histories and identities. Our exhibitions do not carry any age warning. Artefacts or artwork containing nudity are fully contextualised. If you would like further information on the content of our exhibition, please get in touch at hello@queerbritain.org.uk.

For school visits, we request children are accompanied by at least one responsible adult per 10 children, with a maximum number of 20 people. Our Safeguarding Policy is available at the end of this section.

Are animals allowed in the museum? Only service, assistant and emotional support animals are allowed into the museum galleries. No other animals are allowed.

Can I visit with a group? Due to the small footprint of the museum, we kindly request that you limit the size of your group to 15 people, or stagger entry on arrival. Booking for groups is not mandatory, but we would appreciate it if you could let us know by email in advance at hello@queerbritian.org.uk about group visits for over 10 people. We also offer out-of-hours private tours for groups of up to 25 people. You can find out more about them here.

Do you offer guided tours? At the moment, we only offer out-of-hours, private guided tours, but hope to be able to offer regular guided tours in the future.
