First of three residencies to begin in February 2024

COMMUNITY RESIDENCY

PROGRAMME LAUNCHED

ANNOUNCEMENT

WITH THANKS TO OUR CROWDFUND SUPPORTERS

We are working with Traveller Pride and doctoral researcher Shaan Knan for our first community residency. From February to April 2024, Traveller+ community members will be invited to participate in six hybrid sessions at Queer Britain.

Over the year, we will welcome three community groups to participate in residencies at the museum. This series of Community Residences will invite historically underrepresented groups to make use of our studio space and galleries, and research our collection for a three month period. During this time, they can use the space to develop research, creative skills and produce a piece of work (in the form of a zine, an installation or a performance) that will be archived in our collection. Archiving the work will ensure it will be preserved and available for future generations of researchers and visitors. It may also be included in future exhibitions.

With this project we are hoping to make Queer Britain a more accessible space for all communities to meet, think critically and develop skills. By archiving work created by the communities into our collection, we hope to prevent further historical erasement of LGBTQIA+ histories and experiences.

We are excited to begin this new programme by working with the Traveller+ community and increasing the representation of their stories at Queer Britain.

Nan Dorrego Carreira, our Programming and Community Events Manager, said: 'This project will start our first Community Residency Programme which is meant to fight the erasement of underrepresented histories within our LGBTQ+ community, amplifying their voices and experiences for a more inclusive future.'

The Community Residency Programme is made possible thanks to those who donated to our Crowdfund through Art Happens, Art Fund's crowd-funding platform, and is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
